This work was painted outside on a cold winter’s day during a snow storm that was blowing in from the west. The work was inspired by a meeting with David Hockney who lived near the location. We had met the week before at one of my exhibitions and discussed the beauty of the local landscape which Hockney was also painting. I was responding to the light and the elements within the view but also to the narratives of the location and the scattered World War 2 sea defences that were still visible on the beach. It reminded me that our future as a nation was about building bridges not defences and that the project symbolised  our need to connect to people globally.
